Hula Hoops Take Over Mid-Michigan
Swing Your Hips to Lansing’s New Exercise Craze
With the advent of the internet, portable music, and an endless barrage of fusion-inspired exercise, it’s hard to keep up with the latest craze. Fortunately, the newest thing to hit the market, is a throwback from your youth. Hula hooping, or “waist hooping,” has made a comeback in Mid-Michigan with meetups, classes, and even fundraisers dedicated to creating a hoop dance culture in Lansing.
For over 50 years hula hoops have been charming kids and adults of all ages and the game’s new look is no different. Hoop dance combines hula hooping with dance moves and additional hoop tricks like the Escalator and Isolation for a new, fitness-focused twist on a classic game.
Missy Cooke, owner of the hoop dance instruction company Lansing Hoops, is proud to host a community hoop jam in East Lansing this summer. This free family-friendly hoop dance meetup gives local hoopers, and those who want to learn more, a chance to practice and try hoop dance with others. The jam is located in Patriarche Park in East Lansing on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 8:30 pm beginning June 8th and running until August 24th, 2016.
“The 2nd Annual Mid-Michigan hoop jam is a family-friendly event that invites local hoopers, flow artists, and community members a chance to share and learn more about hoop dance,” said Cooke. “Hooping is a ton of fun because it’s something anyone can do. The whole family can participate and stay healthy while they play.”
Hoop dance can even be found at your local night club. Lansing hot spots like Spiral Dance Bar in Old Town and The Loft on Michigan Avenue are flow-friendly joints where you can often find local hoopers enjoying great music while they dance with their hoops.
Women (and men!) in Mid-Michigan can hoop dance their way to www.lansinghoops.com or contact Missy Cooke at (517) 258-1333 to learn more.
Get out there and enjoy this exhilarating new hobby. Hooping is more fun than you’ve had all week!
