Michigan Hoop Dance Retreat 2018
Wow! 3 years already! The Michigan Hoop Dance Retreat is back and this year is going to be even better than you’ve come to expect. 3 years definitely feels like a milestone, so we’re planning a few extra surprises for you this year.
As always, the retreat will feature top notch hoop dance instructors, who promise to bring their A-game. Seriously guys, MHDR is known for bringing high-quality workshops, with a lot of personal focus. Last year, this is what one person had to say.
(Before coming to MHDR), I was concerned with skill levels of the instructors but was happily surprised that everyone was so on top of their game, that i have little doubts of that happening in the future. Honestly, you couldnt have chosen better staff and that helps so many people walk out with so many more skills! I feel as if everyone leveled up at least a few times there!
We have more hoop dance workshops planned than ever before, with a variety of options for every skill level as well as a few auxiliary flow classes, fire flow sessions, an LED jam and fire circle. But the best part is the incredible people you will meet. One of the most magical parts of MHDR is the sense of family and inclusiveness you feel the minute you arrive. There’s nothing quite like meeting and connecting with your people. And the people who come to MHDR are the best kind of people.

Flow artists from all over Michigan and the Midwest come together for one weekend a year. To learn and absorb knowledge, to connect with other hoopers at all different levels on their hoop journey, and to form friendships that feel more like family than your actual family.

Who Can Attend?
Do you have to be from Michigan to attend MHDR?
You do not have to be from Michigan to attend MHDR. Most of us are from Michigan, but flow artists from al over the Midwest join us for the weekend.
Do I have to be really good at hooping to attend?
For your own enjoyment, it is recommended that you can already waist hoop and/or know a handful of off-body hoop tricks. You should have a good grasp (literally and figuratively) on your hoop, but you don’t have to be “advanced”…whatever that means.
I’m in high school. Can I come to MHDR?
Sorry. This is an 18 & older event. Due to insurance and liability issues, this retreat is limited to attendants who are 18 years of age and older.
Can my kids come to MHDR?
No children or anyone under age is allowed at the event. MHDR is strictly 18 yrs +.
Can my pet come?
Pets are not allowed at this event. Please leave your nonhuman friends at home, with a sitter, or at a kennel for the weekend.
**You must have a ticket to enter the event. If you do not have a ticket, you will not be allowed in.
Where is the retreat?
Sunset Place Campground
676 W. Dansville Rd.
Mason, Michigan
You do not have to stay at the campground to attend the retreat. You are welcome to come and go as you please. However, if you leave after 10 pm, re-admittance is not allowed until 8 am the following day.
When is the retreat?
August 10-12, 2018
MHDR 2018 starts on Friday August 10. You are welcome to arrive any time after 4 pm. Early entry will not be allowed. Most attendees arrive on Friday and stay the entire weekend. We will wrap up on Sunday August 12 by 3 pm.
What can I expect out of the weekend?
You can arrive anytime after 4 pm on Friday to set-up your camp and explore the grounds. We’ll kick off Friday evening with a welcome meeting and general hoop shenanigans.
Be ready Saturday morning, bright and early. Workshops run throughout the day and into the early evening. And because you asked, we’ll have more options than ever before. The workshops are the core of MHDR, so plan on spending at least a few hours each day exploring and playing with your hoop.
Saturday evening we have a staff and instructor showcase followed by an LED jam and fire circle, and community bonfire.
Everyone takes a little extra time moving on Sunday morning, so we start with a group potluck breakfast to enjoy a little relaxing time getting to know each other and share a meal. You then have the option to attend more workshops, or pack up your site and get ready to head back.
Please plan on cleaning your site to a better-than-you-found it condition. MHDR is as awesome as you make it. Your help is appreciated!

What is included in the retreat?
Camping, all-day workshops Saturday and Sunday afternoon, the community potluck breakfast, the LED jam and fire circle. But more than anything, you’ll find your people at the Michigan Hoop Dance Retreat.
You will experience friendships and connections you’ve never had before. MHDR is about so much more than hooping. It’s about feeling like you belong. Like finally, you’ve found the people who get you.

The spirit of the whole event pleased me. I don’t think there was a moment that I was bored, uninspired, or lonely. I made new friends that I look forward to seeing in the future. I was surprised by the diversity there. Women of all ages and sizes and skill levels, and men too. Everyone had their own flare to bring to the event and it wouldn’t have been the same without a single one of us.
I was surprised at the amount of people there were and how easy going everyone was! It was really as much fun hanging out at a campsite with everyone as learning new things at the workshops! I was SO pleased with the amazing location and privacy for the retreat! I was so pleased with the workshops and how organized and efficient all the teachers were. And I was very pleased that we’re all at different skill levels, which is so awesome and I love the range in ages too! I am extremely pleased with the “family” feeling I left with. Oh! And I love that there were fire classes and options to learn some tricks on different flow toys!
I left with new friends, a great experience, new tricks up my sleeve and I want my friends to experience this and add to the community too!
